Q&A With Record-Setter Antoine Moret

Q&A With Record-Setter Antoine Moret

De Anza College sophomore Antoine Moret competed against NCAA Division-1 athletes at the Mike Fanelli Distance Carnival at San Francisco State last Saturday - finishing sixth overall while setting the new school record.

Running the event, did you feel like it was a fast time?

"When crossing the finish line at Mike Fanelli, I had no way of knowing what my time was. I knew I had run fast since I had finished higher up in the finishing order than I had expected, but had no clue if I had the record or not. It was only after one of my teammates ran over to me yelling that I realized I had gotten it."

How were the conditions?

"The conditions for the steeplechase were perfect. The meet had been delayed due to thunder in the surrounding area, but during my race the sky cleared up, and we ran around the track as the sun was setting. No wind, and perfect temperature allowed for a fast race"

What was it like competing against Division 1 runners? Did this have an impact on your pace?

"I love racing division 1 athletes. Knowing that I can run at their level, and compete with them as a junior college athlete feels amazing. It allows me to have that "underdog" mentally which pushes me to run even faster. During the race, when I realized I felt good, and most of the runners around me were slowing down, it gave me that extra boost knowing they had all signed for their schools and were on scholarships."

Was the school record a goal prior to the season?

"The school record was never a goal of mine. Last year I was 45 seconds slower than it, and making a 45+ second jump in a season was practically unheard of. That said the moment I realized I had the fitness to go for it, I gave it my best shot. It has been one of our oldest records to date, and getting the opportunity to break it feels surreal."

Moret also serves as vice president DA's student-athlete advisory council.
