Counseling and Advising

We one of the few California community colleges that staff a full-time counselor and a full-time academic advisor - within the Athletics Department - who help monitor the academic progress of student-athletes at De Anza.

Louise Ortiz is the division counselor for Kinesiology majors and student-athletes at De Anza, including those participating in the REACH and FAST programs.

They can assist you with:

  • Choosing classes to reach your academic goal, such as earning a degree or certificate or transferring to a university
  • Creating an educational plan
  • Finding resources on campus, such as tutoring or other assistance
  • Exploring career options
  • Meeting NCAA and NAIA eligibility requirements
  • Setting goals and keeping on track
  • And more!

If you are a prospective student-athlete, please see our steps for getting started.

Student-Athlete Support Group

De Anza's athletics department offers a safe space for our student-athletes, facing different hardships, the opportunity to come together and work through their challenges. While the topics vary based on the group's needs, some examples include:

  • Stress/Anxiety
  • Unhealthy Family/Personal Relationships
  • Self-Esteem Issues
  • Homelessness/Food Insecurities
  • Motivation Issues
  • Impact of Cancellation/Postponement of Athletics

Students are referred by head coaches and complete a screening process.
