We one of the few California community colleges that staff a full-time counselor and a full-time academic advisor - within the Athletics Department - who help monitor the academic progress of student-athletes at De Anza.
Louise Ortiz is the division counselor for Kinesiology majors and student-athletes at De Anza, including those participating in the REACH and FAST programs.
They can assist you with:
- Choosing classes to reach your academic goal, such as earning a degree or certificate or transferring to a university
- Creating an educational plan
- Finding resources on campus, such as tutoring or other assistance
- Exploring career options
- Meeting NCAA and NAIA eligibility requirements
- Setting goals and keeping on track
- And more!

Student-Athlete Support Group
De Anza's athletics department offers a safe space for our student-athletes, facing different hardships, the opportunity to come together and work through their challenges. While the topics vary based on the group's needs, some examples include:
- Stress/Anxiety
- Unhealthy Family/Personal Relationships
- Self-Esteem Issues
- Homelessness/Food Insecurities
- Motivation Issues
- Impact of Cancellation/Postponement of Athletics
Students are referred by head coaches and complete a screening process.
