Bio

Nick Mattis enters his 14th season as the De Anza College Men's and Women's Track and Field/Cross Country Head Coach - currently, the longest tenured in the Coast Conference.

Mattis has won 11 Coast Conference Team Championships and 10 NorCal Regional Top 3 Finishes while coaching at De Anza. He has also led two All-State Academic Teams, several Coast Conference individual champions and an impressive 28 All-Americans. 

In 2013, Mattis was the named California Community College Women's Cross Country Coach of the Year - the same year the team was led by state-champion Katie Castro.  

He has 23 years of coaching experience total in Track and Field (USATF Level 2 Coaching certifeid in sprints, hurdles, relays and multi-events).

During his time at De Anza, Mattis has brought back home meets to the campus - including the De Anza Invitational and Jim Linthicum Invitational. The college stadium/track has also been the host site for Coast and NorCal champioships.

Mattis has served as De Anza assistant athletic director; Coast Conference sport representative for cross country and track & field (State); and NorCal Coaches Chair cross country and track & field. 

Prior to joining DA, Mattis coached at Danville Area Community College (Illinois) assistant XC and T&F (2003-2004); Pontiac Township High School (Illinois) PE Teacher/Assistant W Track & Field (2000-2002); Rockford Boylan High School (Illinois) assistant men's track & field (1997-2000); Blackhawk Junior High School (Iowa) assistant girls track & field (1997); Danvenport Assumption (Iowa) assistant boys track & field (1996).

Mattis played football on scholarship at St. Ambrose University (1992-1995) in Davenport, Iowa as running back. 

He earned his MS of Kinesiology from Western Illinois University and a BA in K-12 PE/Education from St. Ambrose.

Mattis lives with his wife, Jill, and son, Henry, in Morgan Hill.
