De Anza Completes State Sweep!

SAN FRANCISCO - Makayla Than's singles victory completed a De Anza College sweep of all the gold medals at the 3C2A women's badminton championships Saturday afternoon at City College of San Francisco.

Than, the No. 3 Northern California seed, defeated no. 2 seed PJ Yang of Fresno City College, 21-18, 19-21, 21-17, to take the individual title. That followed her Thursday 11-0 win with the Mountain Lions in the dual team championship over Pasadena City College, playing in the No. 2 singles position.

Than, a freshman out of Santa Teresa High (San Jose), kept her calm in the third set after falling short in her set two comeback attempt - where Yang got off to a quick start. "I knew I had won the first set, so I wasn't worried," said Than. "I just concentrated on my placement with my shots." She took the lead at the start of the final set and managed to maintain a 3- to 4-point advantage most of the way.

"This was a revenge match for Makayla," said De Anza coach Mark Landefeld. "She is one of the most athletic players we've had at De Anza. She lost to Yang at last week's Coast Conference tournament."

Than had to defeat her top-seeded teammate, Mailan Vuong, in the semifinals, 21-18, 21-17, to reach the title match.

De Anza had already clinched the doubles crown, with a pair of Mountain Lion teammates playing in the concluding match. Top NorCal seeds Mailan Vuong and Natalee Lam defeated No. 2 seeds Jenny Thai and Karina Chow, 21-14, 21-13, for the title.

This was the fourth De Anza sweep of all titles at the 3C2A championships, according to Landefeld. They had previously accomplished the feat in 2013, 2014, and 2022.

In consolation bracket finals, No. 4 south singles seed Emily Chindemay of San Diego Mesa College defeated her top seeded teammate, Mylene Keophaseut, 21-18, 18-21, 21-19.

In doubles consolation finals, El Camino College's south No. 4 pair of Anya Gore and Montila Winyaworapon beat  San Diego Mesa's No. 3 seeded Tien Nguyen and Christian Nguyen, 21-16, 24-22.
